Get ready to discover the best the area has to offer.
What not to miss
If you desire an unforgettable experience, Maremma will surprise you with its uniqueness. Not only a splendid sea, but also places and situations that carry a particular magic, such as the Etruscan remains that dot the inland territory like Vetulonia and Roselle, and then a day at the thermal waters of Saturnia or a boat trip in the Tuscan archipelago would be worth the journey. In any case, make a first visit to the old Castle of Castiglione, even if the climb is tiring through its narrow streets, but from the top you can enjoy a beautiful view of the gulf. This land, Maremma, was reclaimed by Grand Duke Gianluca Leopolo at the beginning of the 1800s, and preserves a timeless historical charm. Furthermore, during summer nights, the surroundings come alive with special events that will remain in your heart: music, shows, festivals. Everyone then finds the best for themselves by living their personal experience.
Authentic flavors: where to eat and drink
Maremman cuisine is a true paradise for the palate. The fish is fantastic, cooked according to Italian tradition, with simplicity, without particular sauces, but only with the finest Tuscan oil and a few other ingredients. But in Maremma, wild boar also plays a leading role, accompanied by delicious tortelli, pappardelle, and other artisanal pasta specialties. Whether you choose meat or fish, you can't go wrong. Local wines such as Ansonica (or Inzolia) are also produced in the area: an ancient vine, excellent in the Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario DOC, with a savory and structured taste to try with fish. If you want to taste wild boar, take a trip to Tirli (15 min by car); there are typical restaurants. Castiglione has good restaurants, perhaps some a bit touristy but valid and interesting, both in the center and at the castle. You will also find trattorias towards Punta Ala and Pian d'Alma. A special place for pizza is in Pian di Rocca, where there is a tiny and unique enclosed circular square.
Local events and traditions
Maremma is rich in fixed and seasonal events that will make your stay even more interesting. Among the unmissable festivals are various Sagra (local food festivals) both in Castiglione and in nearby towns; consult the information available at the tourist information office in Piazza Garibaldi, the sea film festival at the end of August, and the spectacular "fochi" (fireworks) in mid-August or even the Palio Marinaro (July 15-16 and August 20). There are often concerts at the Castle or in nearby towns (Teatro delle Rocce, Massa Marittima, Parco di Pietra in Roselle, and also the Tarot Garden near Capalbio). These events offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture and traditions, savoring typical products and experiencing unforgettable moments of celebration. Don't miss the chance to participate in these authentic celebrations that enliven our land.
Nature and outdoor adventure
If you love nature and outdoor activities, Maremma offers breathtaking scenery for walks, hikes, and bike rides. You can explore enchanting places like Saturnia, Tuscania, Massa Marittima, or the Uccellina Park for trekking enthusiasts. These places are perfect for immersing yourself in the pristine beauty of the landscape, breathing fresh air, and enjoying unforgettable views. Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply want a quiet stroll, you will find the perfect itinerary for your needs. In the area of Le Marze beach and beyond, kitesurfing is intensively practiced, as you can see from the image next door. In that area, there are free beaches that are not crowded even in August, unlike those in town, which are the usual organized beach establishments. In front of Castiglione is the Tuscan archipelago, and organized boat excursions are available to visit the island of Giglio, Giannutri, or the fantastic Elba; just inquire. The trips are a bit touristy, and the alternative is to rent a sailboat with a skipper for a fuller experience of the sea and the islands of the archipelago.
